Abstract

Demosaicing process which estimates unknown colors of images from CFA to reproduce full color image is an essential process for digital cameras with CFA. In this presentation, a new demosaicing method for Bayer-like W-RGB CFA based on Color Difference Assumption (CDA) is proposed. In order to prevent the blur near the edges, it is important to avoid averaging two pixel values across edge which can cause blur artifact. To that end, edge information should be calculated in advance. By calculating edge strength matrix which contains edge strengths of every pixel, edge direction matrix can be extracted which is used for unknown color estimation step. The proposed method estimates unknown colors based on the principle of CDA. CDA starts estimating by defining the color difference at white location for estimating unknown green color. Defined color difference limits the scope to only one pixel location. The color difference can be extended to 3×3 matrix for including neighboring pixels. By the extended color difference with Laplacian approximation, green color at white location can be estimated. Also, other unknown colors can be estimated by the same principle. Simulation results show that the proposed demosaicing method can demosaic better than the conventional method by approximately 24.6% PSNR and 2.2% feature similarity index (FSIM).
